Creating motion content in the wild world of skateboarding.

In 2019 I had the great opportunity to create the aftermovie of my hometowns skate-music-festival. Catching the vibe and experience from skaters, families and visitors from all over europe with with a one-person team was challenging, but putting togehter a pieces, which resembles the spirit and vision was a great thing to do. At the end, beeing able to show and imagine the sport, crowd and music in retrospective is a great way to start the next venue in the comming years.

Blurring the line between contemporary hero image design and sociocritical art.

Nowadays, various hero images adorn stories and newspaper articles on the Internet. The common goal of these is to visually introduce the reader to the topic.

But what if the image itself becomes the story? The project exists as a 13-piece project that uses illustrative collages to address often dystopian themes in the style of the ubiquitous news and its image leads. Blurring our mediated travel through the digital realm, all images a minted as NFT’s – creating a future experience, how art and design could exist in a code-based world.

The worldwide web has changed everything.

Since we humans are all connected digitally, it has become clear to some, that opinion-forming and propaganda can be easily controlled by algorithms – in some cases artificial intelligence. At the same time, the question of what the ‘real truth’ is is increasingly coming to light.

Blackbox was therefore conceived as a print project that metaphorically opens the actual black box of artificial intelligence and questions our own media competence. Entirely under the philosophical question of truth/lie and closely connected to the events during the Trump presidency, Blackbox presents the user with three interrelated folders – the input, the model, and the output. While the input contains general methods of artificial intelligence, building a frame for the whole project, and the output presents a solution as well as reconnaissance on the dangers and possibilities, the model folder contains 100 tweets of Donald J. Trump printed on foil. However, 50 of these tweets were not written by Trump himself, but by GTP-2 – a text-generation AI in the style of the president. With each tweet, the recipient is thus faced with the task of finding out for himself whether a human or a machine is communicating with him and what truth is. The whole concept, therefore, revolves around user-, or self-experience of discovery and awareness in this digital age. Choosing an analog medium even further underlines the power of the digital and stands in opposition to our identity, conception, and cognizance within the world-wide-web.

In this day and age, we find ourselves in a large sphere of information.

Information is everywhere, anytime. These days, we still use our smartphones to dive into this world of bits and bytes. But with changing technology, this handheld entry will change to a head-mounted, immersive attendance.

‘New Sphere’ was developed as a motion short, which covers this future kind of attendance to a digital world, in which we remain in an affecting technology, surrounding us everywhere we go. Therefore a rupturing of different aesthetical conventions – from a technical motion design standpoint but also a visual approach – was chosen to give the whole setting an infantile and destructive feeling. Strong references to a glitch-art-aesthetic furthermore underline the technical tropos in this new world. The whole short – referring to ‚project. white room at the end as a metaphorical empty room – can be seen as a dystopian view on a possible future, trying to question us, how we do and will perceive the media-reality.

Have you ever questioned yourself, what our media reality looks like?

The whole short was developed within 4 months. From concept to final product the main focus was to make a questioning piece about our world – now and in the future.

Furthermore, a personal drive arose from learning new workflows within various animation and design software. Therefore the whole project was created digitally in AfterEffects and Blender, but also uses partly analog elements and layers. Due to the pandemic, the possibility to use a dedicated system for this kind of heavily loaded motion design was refused, therefore the whole project was rendered on a normal MacBook over several days.

The alpine region is one of the biggest tourist hotspots in the world. But due to rising ecotourism, it is getting harder and harder to balance economic profitability and environmental protection. People.map visualizes the environmental effects of mass tourism interactively by using live data from a mobile light barrier. The project is designed as a  map, that first measures the amount of people entering a certain area and then shows the environmental consequences in real-time on a dedicated webpage.

The whole project was designed as a group work within my master-graduation at the University of Applied Science Salzburg. Within the group, my task was building out the tech behind the whole system – mainly an off-grid-capable light barrier, which could stream in real-time datasets to an online database. Furthermore creating a simple webpage, which in the end serves as our visualization platform and holds different, open-source elements of the whole project.

Taking the course of interaction design, our main goal was to design an interactive project that could be presented at ARS Electronica. Our baseline concept was to project a heightmap onto a 3d-printed mountain ridge in a room. The more people enter the room, the more ‘destroyed’ the projection should become.

However, due to the hit of Covid-19, the concept had to be modified a few weeks after start. To keep people safe, we decided to set up a mobile light barrier at a dedicated spot near the university, which counts every person passing by outdoors. The more people pass, the faster the visualizations on a website should change to destroyed and industrialized images.

One part of the team, including myself, worked on programming a mobile light barrier and linking it to the visualizations on the website, while the other part worked on the visualizations. To find more information, please visit the FHS Portfolio.

Extended reality will be the medium of our future.

The project ‘dimension renaissance’ was developed as an aesthetic and theoretical exploration of this newly emerging, digital realm. In the nature of a speculative design, I figured out an user journey, touching the borders of art and technology. To develop a tangible experience, an exhibition room was created in which the human perceives himself in a mirror of an immersive and digital environment. Due to the covid-pandemic, the whole exhibition was developed only as a conceptual, digital asset.

The digital room would have come together as a walkable mirror-space metaphor. In addition to the digital concept, several text snippets and abstract motion pieces were created, abstracting the idea further and giving a deeper, philosophical framework. ‘Dimension renaissance’ therefore is an experienceable approach to describe an impact and leap in technology, that will surely change the future for all of us.

Virtual reality is not just for us humans.

Prompted by an internet article about cows, which now wear VR goggles, I decided to create a part prototype for a handheld augmented-reality user journey.

Hook to the digital experience is speculative movie-posters, isometrically stylized. Both posters were equipped with handheld augmented reality capability, made possible by image recognition. The static print products thus come to life and serve as a low-fidelity showcase of a technology that is increasingly entering our lives.

Enhanced with AR.

To enable the augmented reality idea, I created a simple, fullscreen IOS application. By using Vuforia, the running device recognizes the analog poster and overlays the print with a  spatial-animated twin.

Further wireframes and flowcharts also outlined the possibility of enhancing the digital platform by providing it with educational information on animal husbandry and further movie content (e.g. BTS).
